Junior Renee Clang is a girl with a passion for fashion. She likes to browse through clothing websites while putting together mental outfits in her head. Her favorite website is Modcloth.com, which was founded by high school sweethearts Eric Koger and Susan Gregg Koger. “If I had a million dollars, I would get rid of most of the clothes in my closet and start a new closet,” said Clang. … Continue Reading

Hot Dog 2x3
Ever since Greeley Central changed their school lunch to 30 minutes in length, many high school students thought there was no possible way to avoid the terrors of sack lunch and cafeteria food.  They couldn’t make food runs in their cars without being late to their classes.  They thought there was no hope, until Eric and Jeff; the Hot Dog Guys came to save the day.  With his lightning fast cart filled with super powered hot dogs, Eric and Jeff provided the students of Central with a delicious and wonderful option to the bland choices provided otherwise.    Almost every day, the Hot Dog Guys save almost 30 people with the powers of hot dogs, walking tacos, monsters, and many more things in their utility cart. Now they see a new school to save: University must be rescued from the evil grasps of the Kum & Go.  Only time will tell to see if we can be rescued with the almighty power of the hot dog. … Continue Reading

A room is filled with vibrant light streaming from a television.  It’s December 31, New Year’s Eve, just before midnight and everyone in the room has their eyes glued to the set.  Dorky celebratory hats line everyone’s heads in the room, and varied layers of seven-layer dip stains their faces but they don’t seem to care.  They are too busy watching, waiting for the big ball in Times Square to begin its descent.  As the ball begins to drop, a rush of excitement and anticipation fills all those watching.  Immediately, everyone begins to think about what they had accomplished in the past year, and what they plan on accomplishing in the year to come.  When the ball finally completes its over-exaggerated drop, a cheer arises from the mob of people and everyone starts hugging and breaking open new cans of Mountain Dew.  This is the start of the American New Year.

Recently, in the United States, teenagers have become more willing to be open about their homosexuality. But, due to teens being more open, a larger problem has started. Teens are harassed about their sexuality and some are picked on so much that they commit suicide. Is life in high school for a homosexual becoming too difficult to handle?

Teens are well aware that they will be harassed if they are open about their sexuality. So, do people at University High School really care if someone is homosexual? Junior Avery Hurt said “I don’t think it’s a big deal if someone just says they are gay but I don’t want to hear anything more than that.” Another junior, Brady Fisher, said “I wouldn’t care if there were kids that are open about being gay I wouldn’t treat them any different, but I wouldn’t want to be hit on by them.” Everyone has their own opinions on this subject, but have high schools become too much for teens that are homosexual?

French culture illustration by Millie Schreibman.

When students think of clubs in high school they automatically think of FCCLA, Key Club, and FBLA. This year, University has added a new club to the list. This is the first year in awhile that University has had a French club.

The French club is run by Ranelle Nortey the high school French teacher. Currently this club has nine members, four of them being officers. Kayla Taylor is the president, Cesar Medina is the vice president and treasurer, and Leslie Zielske is the Secretary. Within this club, the students work on community service and learn not only about the culture of French but Francophone (which means French speaking, such as cultures of Canada and French speaking areas of Africa). The French club will start to do more … Continue Reading

What are the choices? Stay at Home? Dangerous drive? By Jordan Jacoby

Andrew Wingman is a high school student. He is also a key player on his school’s football team. At the beginning of the year he signed an athletic contract stating “student participants areexpected to refrain from the use or possession of alcohol, tobacco, and other regulated and or harmful drugs, including steroids,”(University High Athletic Handbook pg. 6). This is not a problem for Andrew because he does not drink or do drugs.

Winter Break

“We wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy new year!”  With sleigh bells ringing and fake Santas crowding around grocery stores to collect money for the hungry, it’s easy to see that the winter holidays are just around the corner. Whatever holiday you celebrate, it is an amazing escape from school days, and a phenomenal time to enjoy the beautiful snow Colorado has to offer.

In just a few weeks we will be home for a total of 17 days, the equivalent of two and a half weeks.  This time off is the perfect time to create snowmen, drink hot chocolate, have snowball fights, and for some people, enjoy a visit from older siblings, and family who aren’t able to visit that often.  This time of year is treasured because people get together and really celebrate what was great about the year they had and what to accomplish in the year to come. … Continue Reading

School Sadly Seems to Start Sooner

Author: faith October 7, 2010 Opinions, Student Life No Comments
Past starting time (s)

Elementary School, Middle School … an eight year minimum and then a student finally reaches High School. A time of freedom, more responsibility, and, apparently, earlier school. And it’s not just high school students, the older you get the earlier school seems to be. The Elementary starts at 7:55, the Middle School at 7:45, and High School at 7:35. And we even start late, with most of the high schools in Greeley starting at 7:30.

But how fair is this? Haven’t the older students lasted the longest in school? Isn’t it time they get rewarded? “I think I deserve to sleep in later than my younger siblings,” said Aubri Propp, freshman, “I’ve gone through more school than them.” And beyond this, is it even beneficial to our grades?

It’s often recommended to get a good night’s sleep before a big test, but it’s not the only time we need rest. The more sleep we have, within reason, allows for us to perform all memory tasks better. One study shows that students with C’s or less get at least 25 minutes less sleep than better students. In short, we perform better in school with sleep. We’re still growing, just as much as the youngest students and we need just as much sleep, if not more with the higher level expected. Studies have shown however, that high school

Roll out the Red Carpet

Once again the buzz of homecoming week is all around us. This is a chance for University’s incoming students to attend a social event that includes the entire school and to get to know one another.

To start our homecoming week off we will have spirit days.

  • Monday September 26th: Cape day
  • Tuesday September 27th: Blue and white day
  • Wednesday September 28th:  Ninja Pirate day
  • Thursday September 29th: Cartoon day
  • Friday September 30th: Famous person day

Another part of homecoming week will include girls and guys switching places for football. The junior and senior girls will play a game of powder puff football on September 27th, 2010. Junior Tori Fisher said, “I hope to dominate the senior class because the juniors are just that good.”  Although the junior class feels that the turn out of the game will be in their favor, senior Ashley Decker thinks otherwise. “The seniors are more focused this year with more practices so we will win and juniors better come prepared.” The senior boys will be the cheerleaders. The senior boys will also put on a dance! They get the chance to show off their dancing skills to all of their peers and teachers. However, last year’s dance may be hard to top. Senior Jake Winn disagrees, “This year’s senior boy’s dance will definitely top last year’s because we have better songs, more dance moves, and are better looking so be prepared to be entertained.” … Continue Reading

What Do Freshmen Think of High School?

Author: rachel September 21, 2010 Featured, Student Life No Comments

It’s a new year at University Schools, and with that come new freshmen students. High school is a different environment for everyone. Most freshmen would agree that there are good and bad things about high school. “You have more freedom,” says Mary Breen. Others mentioned having more trust and opportunities. But there are also other parts of high school that aren’t quite as fun. “It’s a lot more homework than middle school,” says new student Natalee Patchaett.

Change in discipline

3 May 2012

Zero tolerence

Colorado is closer to eliminating strict zero-tolerance discipline policies in school systems. The policies were adopted after the Columbine High school shooting. No tolerance policies were made to reduce firearms and weapons, as well as alcohol, drugs and other substances to school. Under these policies when they are enforced, students are punished even for minor infringement of rules and codes.

Book Review: The Poisonood Bible

In The Poisonwood Bible, Barbara Kingsolver tells the story of an evangelical Baptist minister and his family, the Prices, on their experience in the Congo on a mission trip in the late 1950s. Nathan Price is devoted to saving the “heathens” of the village, Kilanga, by converting and baptizing them in the crocodile infested river (an idea which they are not fond of). The story is narrated by his wife, Orleanna, and their four daughters …

The Bell Jar Review

The Bell Jar, by Sylvia Plath, is a semiautobiographical of Plath’s life, with people and place’s names changed. The story has a dark undertone throughout the novel and can be disheartening at times, but has comedic breaks scattered throughout the story.

  • "You want to punt a penguin. It was just beating you!"
  • "When she says we need to talk, I focus all my attention on her and don't punch myself in the balls."
  • "Why were you milking her mouse? Because she was holding my backpack hostage!!"
