The athlete's that will never be

Tiger Woods, Paul Stastny, Landon Donovan, Floyd Mayweather Jr.; all of these world class athletes came from hard work and determination in each of their sports, respectively.  And because of that, it means that they never would have gone to University Schools.

Why won’t they go to UH?  The next greatest hockey player or the up-and-rising lacrosse superstar will never come here because we don’t offer their sports.  There are a total of nine CHSAA sports that University doesn’t offer, as well as several other sports that aren’t sponsored by CHSAA, like rugby.  “I wish University would offer more sports.” said freshman Spencer Bradley. … Continue Reading

Emblem for Knowledge Bowl 2011

Knowledge Bowl has never gotten the recognition that a team of its standard deserves.  Everybody bothers going to the football games, and the basketball games.  Track meets, and tennis matches. But have you ever gone to support our Knowledge Bowl team at a meet?  No! Students at University don’t know anything about Knowledge Bowl.  Why, you may ask.  Because people don’t care!  … Continue Reading

Track Ranking System

Author: Cassie May 3, 2011 Sports No Comments

The track team has been introduced to a new ranking system this year which will greatly affect the number of state qualifiers. In past years the most common way to qualify for the state meet was to place in the top three in your event at the regional meet. This year there will be no regional meet; but rather an online ranking system that allows the top eighteen performances of each event to participate in the state meet. Each varsity meet will be another chance for any athlete to be added to the ranks.

UNC Logo 3x2

If you have ever paid the slightest amount of attention to college basketball, you should be familiar with this story. The UNC Bears have made quite a run this season, going 19-10, and wining the Big Sky Conference.  “It has been a good season to be a Bears fan,” said sophomore Geoff Harmer. To most people, this really didn’t matter.  What comes next does too them; an automatic bid into one of the most followed, and celebrated events in sports history, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Snow Shovelin’

Track_300x200

Many students aren’t nearly even brave enough to take a step outside when the snow falls as it usually does.  Few poor kids can survive through shoveling there driveway, much less the sidewalk.  This, although, can’t even compare to what a handful of brave voluntary students did, shovel the track and proceed to spend hours running on it.

It has been a long journey so far for the Bulldog track team.  They have been in practice in anticipation for a possible state championship run since the season ended last year.  The team has stayed in shape all summer and is currently partaking in indoor practices for the upcoming season.  The team usually spends a couple hours after school working on running drills in the hallways and occasionally outside when the weather is nicer.

While these activities may be common among other schools across Colorado, but very few would even consider the obscure thought of sending their runners outside to shovel snow off the track so they can run outside.  Some might even call this psycho. Erika Lopez, a senior, said, “The fact that the track team is shoveling snow is crazy.  It’s not there job anyways.” … Continue Reading

Tom Roche Field: Home of the University Bulldogs

Are you ready to witness the next University state title that isn’t knowledge bowl?  Don’t know where to turn?  Maybe you should stop by a baseball game! This season looks to repeat and build off of last year’s success.  The team had a good season last year, going 13-8 in the regular season.  The Bulldogs placed 2nd in Regionals, yet failed to get into the state tournament last season. After graduating only a few seniors, the team looks strong to repeat.  Macalister LaFrance, a senior baseball player, said, “I think we have a good shot at the state title.”  Alex Breen, a junior on the baseball team, responded to the thought of a state run with “It will take a lot of hard work, but we can get there.”  University’s hopes look high for a state title this year. … Continue Reading

Basketball postseason

Bulldogs basketball for the 2010-2011schools is in the books and both the girls and boys teams finished the season very successfully.  The Bulldog girls finished sixth in the conference while the boys finished third and both earned a trip to regionals.

The Lady Dogs tore through the district tournament with a convincing victory over the Mead Mavericks and an overtime, nail biting win over the Weld Central Rebels that secured them a trip to regionals.  The UH girls closed out their conference tournament with a hard fought loss to the Brush Beetdiggers.  “Districts was fun. I think we surprised some people and we all had fun doing it.” said junior center Tori Fisher.  Finishing sixth in the conference assured the Bulldogs a trip to regionals however, they were to face the perennial 3A powerhouse Holy Family Tigers who are the number one ranked team in all of 3A.  The Lady Dogs entered the game fearless however, Holy Family came out on top putting an abrupt ending to the impressive season they had.  “They [Holy Family] were definitely a great team.  I was proud of how our girls weren’t scared and went out there and competed.”  Returning nearly the entire team next year, the Lady Dogs will look to build upon the successes from this year and hopefully make a run all the way to a state birth next season.

Change in discipline

Zero tolerence

Colorado is closer to eliminating strict zero-tolerance discipline policies in school systems. The policies were adopted after the Columbine High school shooting. No tolerance policies were made to reduce firearms and weapons, as well as alcohol, drugs and other substances to school. Under these policies when they are enforced, students are punished even for minor infringement of rules and codes.

Book Review: The Poisonood Bible

200px-Poisonwood_Bible (1)

In The Poisonwood Bible, Barbara Kingsolver tells the story of an evangelical Baptist minister and his family, the Prices, on their experience in the Congo on a mission trip in the late 1950s. Nathan Price is devoted to saving the “heathens” of the village, Kilanga, by converting and baptizing them in the crocodile infested river (an idea which they are not fond of). The story is narrated by his wife, Orleanna, and their four daughters …

The Bell Jar Review

The Bell Jar, by Sylvia Plath, is a semiautobiographical of Plath’s life, with people and place’s names changed. The story has a dark undertone throughout the novel and can be disheartening at times, but has comedic breaks scattered throughout the story.

Bulldog Talk

Straight from the UH hallways. Its funny. Its bizarre. Its Bulldog Talk

  • "You want to punt a penguin. It was just beating you!"
  • "When she says we need to talk, I focus all my attention on her and don't punch myself in the balls."
  • "Why were you milking her mouse? Because she was holding my backpack hostage!!"
  • ..."my life is filled with fish sticks"
