“Like a Virgin”

some major fashion choices of the 80s

We think that our parents fashion was “lame” and “there’s no way we would ever wear that.” But with a few changes are we, without knowing it? Bright colors, short skirts with tights, high boots, converse, high top sneakers, lots of colored bracelets. Sound familiar? Its modern fashion, as well as fashion from the 80s. So in a vain attempt to make our generation’s fashion memorable we are living a bad 80s flash back.
Walking down a high school hallway in the 80s, the main fashion trends were similar to that of the trends today. Acid wash jeans, converse, short skirts with tights, lots of neon colors, lots of jewelry. On other days sweat pants and spandex, baggy shirts, ankle boots, and of course lettermen jackets. Hair is a totally different concept. Hair was crimped, curled, … Continue Reading

Political Ads: Who Doesn’t Hate Them?

A student comes home from school exhausted.  After sulking through an hour and a half of math, then another hour and a half of Language Arts, and two electives he wished he had never signed up to take, he got on his car and drove.  He drove far, far away, from that school hoping to never return, at least, not until tomorrow.  “What day is it?” he wonders as he glances at the calendar on the pale sitting room wall.  His eyes grow wide with horror, “It’s Monday?!? I have to live through four more days of school this week?  Ohh…well at least I have television to help drain my intelligence away.”  His leg brushed against the coffee table as he sauntered over to the set.  Sighing because of the strenuous activity, he bends over and presses the “ON” button where to his horror; he sees…a political ad. … Continue Reading

Bacteria bankrupts beauty

bacteria bankrupts beauty 300x200

Non-Existent Sally wakes up, takes a shower, washes her hair, dresses herself, and for the final touch, she stands in front of the mirror and lobs make-up, or cake-up, onto her face, thinking any blemishes she has will disappear. She’ll go through an entire day of school; unaware of the dirt and bacteria she picks up off of tables or other objects, and she may occasionally touch her face to itch it. Maybe she’ll sweep her bangs to the side. After a night of homework, she’ll brush her teeth and plop on the bed to sleep.

That is her daily routine. But what’s missing? Remember all that make up she put on her face at the beginning of the day? She neglected to take it off! Don’t think anything is wrong with that? Well girls, THINK AGAIN!

A new healthier, natural you.

Natural products for a natural look. Photo illustration courtesy of Millie Schreibman.

Make-up here, make-up there, make-up everywhere! Well make-up fake up! Using natural products or no make up at all is so much better! Not only is it healthier, it’s potentially cheaper, if one is frugal with one’s money.

They first way going natural is cost effective is that ones does not need to buy certain products anymore. In other words, trash the foundation. There is no need for it. The skin cannot breathe. A healthier way, although more time consuming is to use face masks created out of natural ingredients, such as bananas and oatmeal. There are many resources online for face-mask recipes, such as http://www.wittyliving.com/recipes/facial-mask-recipes.html. And get this! They’re free!

What are the choices? Stay at Home? Dangerous drive? By Jordan Jacoby

Andrew Wingman is a high school student. He is also a key player on his school’s football team. At the beginning of the year he signed an athletic contract stating “student participants areexpected to refrain from the use or possession of alcohol, tobacco, and other regulated and or harmful drugs, including steroids,”(University High Athletic Handbook pg. 6). This is not a problem for Andrew because he does not drink or do drugs.

Addicts not Key Clubbers

Imagine being an elementary student, its red ribbon week and you have high school students come in and talk to you about how doing drugs is detrimental to your health. Wouldn’t it be more effective to have someone who was previously addicted to drugs speak to elementary students? Someone who has no teeth, their face sullen and disfigured, with track marks up their arms? Would that scare someone into not doing drugs? Would seeing the results of drug use be an effective way to lessen the numbers of drug users in our generation?

Key Club members go around to elementary classes and talk to students about how they shouldn’t use drugs or take medicine that

School Sadly Seems to Start Sooner

Author: faith October 7, 2010 Opinions, Student Life No Comments
Past starting time (s)

Elementary School, Middle School … an eight year minimum and then a student finally reaches High School. A time of freedom, more responsibility, and, apparently, earlier school. And it’s not just high school students, the older you get the earlier school seems to be. The Elementary starts at 7:55, the Middle School at 7:45, and High School at 7:35. And we even start late, with most of the high schools in Greeley starting at 7:30.

But how fair is this? Haven’t the older students lasted the longest in school? Isn’t it time they get rewarded? “I think I deserve to sleep in later than my younger siblings,” said Aubri Propp, freshman, “I’ve gone through more school than them.” And beyond this, is it even beneficial to our grades?

It’s often recommended to get a good night’s sleep before a big test, but it’s not the only time we need rest. The more sleep we have, within reason, allows for us to perform all memory tasks better. One study shows that students with C’s or less get at least 25 minutes less sleep than better students. In short, we perform better in school with sleep. We’re still growing, just as much as the youngest students and we need just as much sleep, if not more with the higher level expected. Studies have shown however, that high school

Greatest Song You’ve Ever Heard

Green day on the Ipod (s)

Practically every teenager in the world loves music. Whether it’s classical, rock, R&B, rap, any teenager can be seen at some point with headphones in their ears, mouthing the words to a song they can never get out of their heads.  Some music-lovers even say that music makes the world go round.

When thinking about a favorite song, a lot of people end up coming to a blank at first.  There are millions of songs out there, so thinking of a favorite song is tough for many members of our school.  Some people, know exactly what song they love and it’s amazing how fast some kids can answer.  And for others, it takes a while even with a couple days of thought to think of the song that stands out to them from the rest of their songs in the ultimate playlist.

Most kids say their favorite genre of music is rock, or a subgenre of rock.  These can include pop rock, hard rock, classic rock, southern rock, alternative rock, rock and roll, and countless other subgenres.  Such bands that are popular among students now a

Change in discipline

Zero tolerence

Colorado is closer to eliminating strict zero-tolerance discipline policies in school systems. The policies were adopted after the Columbine High school shooting. No tolerance policies were made to reduce firearms and weapons, as well as alcohol, drugs and other substances to school. Under these policies when they are enforced, students are punished even for minor infringement of rules and codes.

Book Review: The Poisonood Bible

3 May 2012

200px-Poisonwood_Bible (1)

In The Poisonwood Bible, Barbara Kingsolver tells the story of an evangelical Baptist minister and his family, the Prices, on their experience in the Congo on a mission trip in the late 1950s. Nathan Price is devoted to saving the “heathens” of the village, Kilanga, by converting and baptizing them in the crocodile infested river (an idea which they are not fond of). The story is narrated by his wife, Orleanna, and their four daughters …

The Bell Jar Review

The Bell Jar, by Sylvia Plath, is a semiautobiographical of Plath’s life, with people and place’s names changed. The story has a dark undertone throughout the novel and can be disheartening at times, but has comedic breaks scattered throughout the story.
