“End Piracy Not Liberty”

Author: Karissa January 24, 2012 Opinions No Comments

Yesterday, January 18th, websites were “blacked out.” Why? Two words: SOPA and PIPA.

SOPA and PIPA: the two words or acronyms that have been taking over on newsfeeds and dashboards. Two words which represent two bills that could very well change the nation and impact the world.

This is a screenshot of Google who opposes SOPA and PIPA.

So what are these two words that have the world buzzing within a matter of days? SOPA: stop online piracy act. PIPA: Protect IP Act.

The intensions are great behind the two bills. That is probably the only positive thing that can be said about them. The members of congress are trying to end piracy and counterfeit. However the radical direction of this intension leads to SOPA and PIPA.

What SOPA and PIPA means for the U.S.

Basically these two bills will censor the internet. The government will be blocking certain websites; this might sound a lot like what China does. This time and generation, which is often referred to as the digital age, would basically sink like the Titanic. With everything being censored it would kill the industry’s economic growth and discourage innovators. The whole point of these extremes is to end piracy. The chance of this happening, after these bills are passed, is highly unlikely. These bills won’t shut down websites for piracy. Piracy will always be on the web, they will just become more discrete.

SOPA and PIPA aren’t just bills. They are bills that if passed, could destroy freedom of speech for a whole generation. That would severely diminish the freedom of expression. It’s the job of everyone who has ever accessed the internet, updated a Facebook status, tweeted a thought, reblogged a photo on Tumblr, or sent an email on yahoo to stop this outrage.

Vote NO on PIPA and SOPA. “End piracy, not liberty.”

Man found dead in movie theater bathroom

People die all the time, people also go missing all the time. For society, it seems normal. The body of George DeGrazio, 66 was found in a locked family restroom at the Cinemark in Fort Collins. DeGrazio had died of a heart attack. It would be a normal scenario, however the body wasn’t discovered until 5 days later due to the body’s rotting smell. The family reported him missing on January 9th. Family members are …

Only Revolutions Book Review

Inside of the book

When one approaches any novel by Danielewski, they usually expect innovative typography mixed with the author’s surprising prose. This was shown in his first book, House of Leaves, where he manipulated the text on the page to express ideas, thoughts, metaphors, and plot. Yet as one picks up Only Revolutions, the typography offers less of an art form and more of a daunting task the reader must traverse. This mixed with Danielewski playing with prose …

Multi-tasking Boys

31 Jan 2012

feat.

High school boys are mischievous people and don’t usually think before they act. An effect of this is the mysterious hole in the upstairs high school boy’s bathroom. This bathroom is filled with many secrets. Boys you will understand. Girls, you will never know. Apparently to a boy, peeing gets very boring. Since boys are die hard multi-taskers they tend to do other things while doing their business, such as checking their texts, checking the …

Matched Book Review

Matched Trilogy coming out on top of The Hunger Games?

Matched by Ally Condie is very similar to the Hunger Games. Although it has the ‘love triangle’ and similar problems with the government as The Hunger Games it isn’t exactly the same. It does have it’s own plot, it was actually just as, if not more so, interesting then the Hunger Games.  Cassia, the heroine of the novel, is a sorter. It’s interesting that what she’s good at is sorting people, objects, colors, numbers, etc. …
